Near Context, sketch

Near context for Skt. Anna Gade 53.
Colors are only indicators of the main texture on the ground – grass is the main material on the ground in the 'backyard-garden' on the right, and cement in the school yard to the left.

A1 Submission; Inside/Out

From top to bottom:
  • Section – New window on the right, basic idea for new shower space.
  • Plan – Small space for sitting in the shower cabin (changing/clothing), new        showers.
  • On the plan – Close-ups of the planned new openings – small hole for view, only visible when sitting, two pictures on the right. Light from the top-opening, two pictures on the left.
  • Bottom, left – Program, current & planned
  • Bottom, right – Light Studies in 3D.

Function: Current & Planned

Top: Current use of the space. Main problem: not enough space for training, ineffective use of the smaller spaces, unfocused function.

Bottom: Planned use of space – more room for training, more effective use of space, new showers in the second largest space.

of Old, make New

Light studies: Amounts of light, lighting of volumes, diffuse and direct sunlight.

Program Sketching

Recreating a Light Situation

The window I chose for the assignment 'Window: Inside/Out' is found at Aarhus Harbor, at a small rowing club. The window itself faces south/east, which means that there will be a good amount of light shining through the window on a regular day.

The building is very 'funkis', almost factory, looking. The windows mullions are in cast-iron, which create a very sharp shadow in direct sunlight. But, as the video recording in one of the earlier post show, they also create a very pulsating light over time in a more dim light-enviroment.

Material, Inside/Out

Part of the material for the recording of a site for the assignment Window: Inside/Out.
From top to bottom:

1) The building itself is a rowing club, located at Aarhus Harbor. It has a very distinct look to it, that could remind one of the funkis style, functionalism, and perhaps even a little Corbusier.

2) Sketch. The chosen window is one of the three big window frames, the one right in the middle. The whole 'upper-façade' probably used to be one room, but is now separated by a makeshift wall. The focus of the light situational pictures, are pointed at this wall and the window located right next to it.

3) A section straight through the room with the one-and-a-half windows.

4) Six stills from a 5 hour video recording that can be seen here . The changing light situation have been strengthened through a bit of photo-manipulating, though some of the pictures are only cropped/straightened. The situations are rain, sun, night, indirect light, etc.

5) A inspirational picture for myself; the rain gives a very special texture to the light, as well as blurring out the view, making it nothing more than an impressionistic situation of light, sensations and sound.
